Boxboom Foldable Drum Kit Rethinks Beginner Music Learning

Boxboom foldable drum kit is a graduation project by Umeå Institute of Design graduate Xiaoyu Yu that combines a compact electronic drum set with a rental-based service model for first-time players. The system folds from a portable box into a full electronic drum configuration using modular joints that support flexible layouts and quick assembly. Replaceable components are incorporated to withstand repeated rentals, while a central hub integrates a phone holder, power controls, and drumstick storage within a single structure.

The project extends beyond the hardware with a service platform connecting users, rental providers, and drum training institutions through online booking and delivery. Research conducted with Umeå Music School and Toontrack informed the development process, which progressed from 1:10 study models to full-scale prototypes that refined the folding mechanism and setup sequence. The electronic drum kit was developed around accessibility, portability, and ease of learning, reducing the space and financial commitment typically associated with beginner drum equipment.
