Shahar Livne's 'Blood Sneakers' Repurpose Waste from the Slaughterhouse

Shahar Livne's The Meat Factory project is an ongoing one that has been explored since 2015 and as part of it, the designer created a pair of alternative leather Blood Sneakers made from slaughterhouse waste. In the spirit of using the entirety of an animal from "nose to tail," the series explores the use of fat and bones as sustainable materials. Alongside these materials, the sneakers feature inserts that are made from a leather alternative, which have also been colored with discarded blood.

As Livne describes, "The Meat Factory project investigates the dissonance people have with the food on their plates and the living animal, and the psychological dissonance between raw materials and processed materials." While many people are used to consuming animal products and wearing animal-based materials, this project challenges people to see food and fashion in a different light.
