Birch Bark Could Replace Palm Oil Found in Cosmetics

A Finnish startup, Innomost, is developing a bioactive compound made from birch bark, which could offer a sustainable alternative to palm and fossil ingredients found in beauty and personal care products.

The startup was founded in 2016 and has focused on developing ingredients made from birch bark streams - such as birch charcoal powders, azelaic acid, betulin, etc. Innomost uses an industrial processing technology and works with a Finnish forestry company Metsa Group to source the raw birch bark necessary to produce its products.

The majority of cosmetic products currently on the market use ingredients and packaging material made from unsustainable practices and unhealthy ingredients - such as palm oil, fossil fuels, and plastics. Innomost believes its new birch-derived bioactive compound will revolutionize the cosmetic industry into a more sustainable and ethical market.
