Irish studio McGarry-Moon Architects have updated the 'Loughlougharn Barn,' a structure which has been long-listed for an award from the Royal Institute of British Architects, by inserting a contemporary living space within it.
In order to keep the additions light, the architects introduced the steel-framed upper story inside the building's walls, instead of on top of them. The architects explain, "The living space appears as if it has been plugged into the barn and has an altogether different, albeit rural, architectural language. The zinc cladding and glass facades are suspended from the steel structure minimizing the load on the existing structure."
Inside, the new level features an open-concept kitchen, dining and living space on one end, while a master bedroom and corresponding en suite bathroom are located on the opposite side, where a cantilevered edge has increased interior floor space.
