Indoor Rain Installations

Random International's Barbican Gallery Exhibit is Wet

Random International's artistic experiments with precipitation are currently on display at the UK's Barbican gallery. The project brings rain to the indoors, allowing visitors to step inside torrential downpours within the comforts of a darkly lit room.

Despite the streaming drops of water, sensors leave guests entirely dry. As one walks through the Random International structure, the faux rain ceases to fall from the top of the installation.

Founder Florian Ortkrass and his contemporaries Stuart Wood and Hannes Koch began their involvement with rain in 2008 as a part of their Audience exhibit. They have since set out to monitor the behavior of individuals who find themselves immersed in these unnatural scenarios. Cognitive scientist Philip Barnard has been essential to the research, documenting humorous and at time horrified reactions.
