The bamboo bicycle, made by Zambians in Zambia, provides a strong and supportive lightweight frame for the two-wheeler. The environmentally sound project directly supports the struggling economy in Zambia by providing jobs and opportunities.
A California based comapny called Zambikes has made the unique bike available around the world through their online store at zambikes.com, as well as the six locations around the United States, and one more in Cape Town, South Africa.
The products and prices range widely, but a single-speed bike made from bamboo costs about $1,250 US.
Implications - While some might consider it a lot of money for a bicycle made from bamboo, customers continue to flock to the website and store locations in support of environmentally sustainable products and the developing nation. This goes to prove that customers are willing to pay a little more if it contributes to a positive cause.
