The Google Maps Gemini AI upgrade introduces a conversational feature called Ask Maps that allows users to ask natural-language questions directly within the app. Instead of typing search keywords, people can ask practical queries such as where to find a quiet café with charging outlets or whether nearby sports courts have lights at night. The system analyzes Google’s mapping database of hundreds of millions of locations along with user preferences, past searches, and saved places to return tailored recommendations and suggested routes.
The update also introduces Immersive Navigation, a redesigned navigation mode that adds detailed 3D visuals, transparent buildings, and highlighted road features such as lanes, crosswalks, and traffic lights. The interface shows contextual explanations for route choices and previews of parking and entrances near the destination. These upgrades mark one of the largest changes to Google Maps in more than a decade and are rolling out first on Android and iOS in the United States and India, with wider availability expected later.
