Ashley Bickerton Highlights the Unsavory in Her Latest Exhibit

Contemporary artist Ashley Bickerton's latest exhibit, Nocture, features images that focus on the seedy underbelly that exists in any area of the world considered to be a paradise.

If anyone would know what that underbelly would look like, it would be Ashley Bickerton. Born in the Barbados but currently living in Bali, Bickerton's Nocture series features a fantastical collection of art that highlights swollen sex tourists, bored travel companions and travelers with no respect for the indigenous cultures in the places they choose to vacation.

Almost all of the paintings in the Ashley Bickerton collection are disconcerting. They force the viewer to examine what they consider to be suitable behavior while on vacation, and they raise awareness of the plight of those that live in those areas.

Ashley Bickerton's Nocture runs at New York's Lehmann Maupin Gallery until June 25, 2011.
