Maze-Like Resting Areas

This Zigzagging Building Provides a Sleeping Area for Pilgrimages

This zigzagging structure was built as a resting area for pilgrimages. For nearly 900 years, thousands of people visit this north-east region of Hungary near the Mátraverebély village to visit sacred waters of nearby springs. The place is perceived as holy, and many continue to visit to take advantage of the healing powers of the water. Near the springs, there is also a Baroque church and monastery.

To cope with the number of annual visitors, a long, winding building was built along the path to the springs and church. The 300 meter long wing will extend from the refurbished monasteries and will house a multipurpose room for visitors and dormitory buildings for pilgrims. The rooms are designed to be shared overnight by eight to 14 people. Connecting the entire complex is an outdoor corridor wrapped by a shaded wooden structure.
