The 'Aluminum Flower Garden' Engulfs a Ceiling with Metal Waves

Bearing down on patrons of the HANA restaurant and Bar, the Aluminum Flower Garden flows across the ceiling. Designers at Moriyuki Ochiai Architects created the installation to augment the HANA's interior. Though intended to represent a garden, the smooth curves and continuous lines give the impression that metal clouds are hanging overhead.

Inspired by origami, the designers decided to use a single plane of aluminum in order to create the sculpture. Just like origami uses a single piece of paper to create something miraculous, the Aluminum Flower Garden uses a single piece of metal. Each flowing fold was made to represent a petal of a flower. A theme of flowers was chosen because HANA is a Japanese word for flower.
