Artist Ali Cavanaugh Creates Colorful Face-Shielding Art

Ali Cavanaugh is a St. Louis artist whose work provides an intriguing window into alternate perspectives on art and life. Cavanaugh's penchant for focusing on alternate outlooks comes from changes in her own life that forced her to rely on nontraditional methods of focus: at the age of 2, a viral meningitis infection took her hearing.

"This loss was a blessing in disguise," she said. "I learned to depend on body language and lip read to communicate."

Ali Cavanaugh's work is heavily influenced by the juxtaposition between the seen and the unseen. Her work often features delicate images of young women, with an eye towards capturing "the tender unseen presence that transcends understanding in the depth of a soul."

Ali Cavanaugh's colorful and layered paintings have been extremely successful. She has been featured in over 40 solo and group exhibits at museums around the U.S., and her work has appeared in publications American Art Collector and Art Calendar Magazine. Her latest series, "Arcs & Angels," recently finished a showing in St. Louis and is being shown at the Robert Lange Studio in Charleston, South Carolina until May 27, 2011.
