The rhinoceros gallery in Rome, in collaboration with the Brazilian gallery A Gentil Carioca, is presenting 'Água mole em pedra dura,' which translates to 'Little Strokes Fell Great Oaks,' from June 9th through August 13th, 2026. This is the first solo exhibition in Italy by artist Rodrigo Torres.
'Água mole em pedra dura' features works conceived during a two-month artistic residency at c.r.e.t.a., Rome's leading center for ceramic arts, where Torres produced a new series of ceramic sculptures and a fountain, alongside drawings and paintings on paper. Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro's Tijuca neighborhood, where urbanization coexists with the surrounding forest, Torres's practice is deeply informed by the tensions between growth, erosion, permanence, and destruction, with his sculptures examining the transformation of matter as minerals extracted from the earth are elevated into monumental forms that eventually fragment and return to the ground. In Rome, he encountered an opposing condition where architecture appears suspended in a constant effort to resist deterioration, and his sculptures exist within this strain.
