2nd Place Long Island Cinema Affords an Entertaining Experience

There is a more profound meaning to the expression "form follows function," and the 2nd Place Long Island Cinema proposal strives to achieve it. While the program of the building is honored in the structure, the designers behind this semi-finalist entry wished to make each visitor feel like a character in a movie upon entering the establishment.

Nick Kunkle, Dennis Burke and Eduardo Ponce gave their imaginative architectural design a five point plot. Theater-goers experience the exposition of the edifice as they approach it and the rising action as they navigate the concession stands, terraces, gallery spaces and auditoriums on each escalating level. The climax is the beginning of the movie, and the falling action and resolution come once the film has ended. The 2nd Place Long Island Cinema embodies additional drama with its transparent skin, slanted structure and the way it reacts to its parkland surroundings.
