MIT Scientists are Working on a New X-AR Headset to See Through Objects

The team of scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology showcases its latest work in the form of the X-AR headset which is a modified augmented-reality headset that allows users to see hidden objects. It is made as a custom version of a Microsoft Hololens by blending computer vision with the wireless perception that automatically locates items that can't be seen visually.

Instead of X-ray waves, the machine relies on radio frequency signals that are meant to pass through commonplace materials including plastic and wood. Associate Professor Fadel Adib notes that "Our whole goal with this project was to build an augmented reality system that allows you to see things that are invisible—things that are in boxes or around corners—and in doing so, it can guide you toward them and truly allow you to see the physical world in ways that were not possible before."
