Proposed Wildlife Sanctuaries

Antarctica Could House the World's Largest Wildlife Sanctuary

The EU and Greenpeace are attempting to protect a 700,000 square-mile of Antarctica and have proposed to transform the massive space into the world's largest wildlife sanctuary.

The sanctuary was initially proposed by the EU after the Unites States continued to open these areas of the Weddell Sea and around the Antarctic Peninsula for drilling and fishing. The proposal was later backed by Greenpeace and is set to go to conference this October. If accepted, the reserve would protect killer and blue whales, seals, penguins and other forms underwater life. For scale, the entire area is about the same size of Germany and in addition to protecting wildlife, it would play a major role in alleviating some of the risks associated with climate change.
