The Wooden Block Staircase is an Architectural Paradox of Bulk and Lightness

On the one hand, this wooden block staircase bears this sense of near weightlessness, thanks to its apparently supportless assembly. On the other hand, you can tell that you're looking at thick and solid lumber beams that must undoubtedly be quite heavy.

QC of Rzeszów, Poland, devised this bold architectural feature for a split-level apartment under renovations. Tucked into a nook in the center of the home, the spiral staircase has walls on three sides and only relies on them for bracing at a few points on the way up. The bulky sections of spruce timber have been stacked and glued and reinforced with a metal rod up the middle. This wooden block staircase commands attention in the core of this dwelling with its surprising construction and organic details.
