Working to bring down the deep false ceiling in this Hamamatsu apartment, the designers knew that they could be resourceful about the wooden materials' reuse. They sliced the planks against the grain to expose the rough textures and the natural lines of the lumber. Hundreds of these short hunks were put together like puzzle pieces to construct this wood block floor into a continuous, crack-resistant and soundproof surface. The entire thing has been sanded so that it feels soft and even to the feet.
