There's something satisfying about sipping a drink in the open air, but the presence of pests can detract from the enjoyment of the experience, which is why Tamworth Distilling created a first-of-its-kind "whiskito" called Skeeter’s Nootkatone Flavored Whiskey.
Nootkatone is the naturally occurring compound found in grapefruit peel and Alaska yellow cedar, and it's commonly used as an active ingredient in insect repellents to ward off mosquitoes. "Anyone from rural New Hampshire knows that bug season, which happens from May to mid-July, is no joke," founder Steven Grasse said in a news release. "At Tamworth Distilling, we draw inspiration from the land around us—and Skeeter’s is no exception."
This flavored whiskey, layered with notes of grapefruit, eucalyptus, lemongrass and botanicals, is made to be sprayed onto cocktails to make their flavor and aroma more enticing to drinkers, and less appealing to bugs.
