This Liquid Nitrogen Welding Technique Shrinks Metals to Mold Them Together

Paul Cocksedge is known for his creative techniques and nature-inspired designs, which makes this frozen welding technique right up his alley. Designed for his exhibit at the Friedman Benda gallery, the technique freezes metal so that it shrinks, slots together and expands. Once the metals have warmed, the metals are seamlessly joined together, eliminating the need for heated welding.

The furniture designs are stunning, including a large circular table that slotted many smaller circular pieces within and a bench with slanted metal backs. Instead of heat, this liquid nitrogen welding technique uses a lack thereof to join materials together. By doing so, it can attach metals that otherwise couldn't be molded together like copper and brass.
