Weather-Forecasting Satellites

Tiny 'CubeSats' Could Be Used as Accurate Weather Satellites

San Francisco-based startup Spire is looking to use a network of tiny weather satellite CubeSats to provide exceptionally accurate weather forecasts. The aim is to use a linked network of over 100 CubeSats, each of which is about the size of a shoebox, that will make use of GPS technology to gather over 100 times the amount of weather data than currently possible. The first 20 satellites are set to be launched later this year.

Each CubeSat will cost less than typical full-sized weather satellites but will offer more computing power. Moreover, their software can be remotely upgraded via radio transmissions from ground level.

This is a great example of how scientific innovation can be used to reduce costs while improving the value of a service.
