The Water Calligraphy Device Spews Meaning

The Water Calligraphy Device spews water to create decorative and meaningful designs. Constructed by Nicholas Hanna, a Canadian artist and engineer based in Hong Kong. The aquatic scribe is by his own admission "fascinated by the aesthetic potential of materials, tectonics, science and technology."

Drawn to the absurd, Hanna decided to explore the language and traditional penmanship of his adopted culture in a bizarre but ultimately beautiful way. His Water Calligraphy Device recaptures our childhood fascination with the simple interaction between pavement and water, and the fantastic assortment of odd designs that result through this basic collaboration. The fact that the alteration of tone in sidewalks can be transformed into something communicative is mind-boggling, yet still within the realm of sense.

Hanna's Water Calligraphy Device shows us how we can alter our environment to create something special with nothing more than a few gallons of water and a little ingenuity.
