The Walsh Street Apartments Ensure Privacy

Australian firm B.E. Architecture designed the 'Walsh Street Apartments,' a three-storey complex in Melbourne's South Yarra neighborhood. The property was designed for a couple who realized the space could be divided into two.

The architects clad the apartments in two different materials in order to make them feel like individual houses. Though the apartments share an entrance and basement, they are built on separate levels, and otherwise don't have a relationship with one another. The terraces, which are located on the west and north sides, are built one atop the other.

The architects explain, "The most difficult aspect was creating the feeling of privacy, not just from neighboring houses, but from the other apartment in the same building. Sight lines were carefully planned so that the deep-set balcony on the upper level is not overlooked by neighboring properties."
