These Volvo Robots Help Autonomously Pick Up Garbage

These new Volvo robots are the result of a collaboration between the Swedish automaker and a number of educational institutions and companies in both Sweden and the USA. These robots are part of Project ROAR (Robot-Based Autonomous Refuse Handling).

This particular project looks to build robots that will assist operators of garbage trucks by doing the heavy lifting and emptying for them autonomously. An added advantage of these Volvo robots is their ability to do the job quietly, and under the supervision of the truck's driver. The robots take directions from the truck's operating system, with all directions coming directly from the human driver.

This Volvo robot project provides, in the words of project leader Per-Lage Gotvall, a way to stretch the imagination and test new concepts to shape transport solutions for tomorrow."
