LED and Wooden Fashion to Light Up London's Design Museum

London’s Design Museum will do a retrospective on British/Turkish Cypriot fashion designer and visionary Hussein Chalayan.

Chalayan may not be a household name in the fashion world yet, but his jaw-dropping creations are so thrilling and avant-garde that it will not be long before his fantastic vision turns him into an iconic figure in the industry.

Speaking from an aesthetic point of view, Chalayan’s collections are an impressive mixture of architecture, engineering, theater, fashion, and art elevated to their maximum expression.

The designer’s exquisite creations have taken him to experiment with different kinds of media including LED technology. A good example of Chalayan’s work with that medium consists of a superb dress made out of Swarovski crystals with over 15,000 flickering LED lights; another of his creations is a dress made of materials used in aircraft construction which changes shape by remote control.

Hussein Chalayan’s best-known creation, however, was unveiled as coffee table that had been part of a stage set until a model steps into the table, pulls it up around her waist and walks, thereby transforming a piece of furniture into a wearable, portable garment.

Chalayan’s work will be on exhibit at the museum from January 22nd until the 17th of May 2009.
