Virgin Atlantic Airlines Unveiled Food Trays That are More Economical

Virgin Atlantic came up with a way to shed up to 53 pounds of weight from the plane by simply redesigning its food trays. Together with a London-based design firm MAP, the airline turned its kitchenware into flatware, which also allows for fewer carts.

Due to the slimmer redesign, weight is also reduced from the amount of carts on the plane. More trays can now fit into each cart, which in turn, diminishes the need for a hefty amount of them. The airline will have a drastically reduced carbon footprint; it will have reduced greenhouse gas emissions and have lower fuel costs.

In addition to being economical, the trays are ergonomically pleasing. They have non-slip surfaces and are actually foldable and two-tiered. Who knew such a simple concept could make such a drastic difference?
