French Artist David Redon Inserted Modern Musical Icons into Vintage Ads

French designer David Redon’s artwork incorporates modern American musical pop culture icons into vintage ads from the middle of the 20th century, with amusing results. Redon, an art director at Parisian agency Quai Des Orfevres, cleverly inserted contemporary and recent pop musicians into old-school ads, using his imagination and creativity to put a unique spin on American advertising and pop culture.

The modern pop culture icons featured in the ads include Michael Jackson, Kurt Cobain, Snoop Dog and Pharrell, all creatively and amusingly inserted into various vintage ads. Redon created these pieces by searching for vintage ads and then choosing artists to insert into them. He then retouched and edited the artists’ images and modified the existing ads’ layouts before inserting the musicians’ images into them.

"I like the shift between vintage and modern pop culture, because these days the border between art and commercial is very small, and artists work their images like brands do," Redon said.
