Shadow-Equipped Chairs

This Unusual Chair Casts a Large Shadow of a Walnut Tree

It's hard to show in a photograph how this unusual chair works. It causes an optical illusion, seeming as if a two-legged chair is casting a large shadow of a tree. This clever design, called The Walnut Tree Shadow Chair, is by UK-based design studio 'duffylondon.' How this chair actually works is actually quite simple, but it would be hard to envision.

The chair can stand on only two legs because it is supported by a black fix on the ground, which appears to be the bottom of the tree's shadow. The black steel base extends a while to support the chair, but at a certain point, the chair connects to a black wool felt in the form of a tree. This part of the chair may look like a shadow, but is actually a tangible material cut-out. The tree shadow big enough to be used as a rug.
