In light of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, many are looking for initiatives to support like Rethink Breast Cancer’s Uncovered: A Breast Recognition Project. The project was created in response to the significant underrepresentation of and lack of support for Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour within the breast cancer community.
Uncovered aims to assist BI&POC with breast cancer in feeling seen in their unique experiences and to educate healthcare providers about the realities and needs of BI&POC, so they can be better equipped to assist them. Through 16 women's stories, this project focuses on breast cancer, cultural barriers, and health inequities.
"Uncovered has been a cathartic means for me to express, in the most empowering way possible, what has been a long and frustrating part of my breast cancer journey. This project is my way of uncovering the voices of women of colour who are left in the dark when they try to see themselves represented in the cancer community," said Michelle Audoin, diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer at age 40.
