The Trash Land will pummel you with a range of different and often conflicting emotions and thoughts, from disgust and pity to horror and sadness. The idea that this is the way of life for many people is utterly eye-opening. Of course, there are many images and stories of the trials and tribulations of those living in third-world conditions, but scavenging in garbage sites is an inhumane way to exist.
Shot by Portugal-based photographer Jose Ferreira, the Trash Land photo series is a far cry from his fashion photography. I cannot imagine what compelled him to visit southern Mozambique and specifically the dumps of Hulene, but I am glad that he decided to document what he saw, putting together this heart-wrenching Trash Land series. As Nuno Silva writes, Trash Land depicts a "sad truth that stubbornly disfigures civil society and the condition of man."
