Submerged Transportation Bridges

The Norwegian Fjords Floating Tunnel Places Traffic Underwater

Norway is expanding its ground road system to the water with an innovative floating transportation bridge located underwater. The bridge will be a large tunnel that will feed through Kristiansand to Trondheim and cut down the travel time between the southern and northern regions by half. The project aims to increase roads without utilizing space on land.

There are numerous benefits to creating an underwater traffic tunnel, including the ability to cut the journey from each town down from 21 hours to a mere 11 thanks to the uninterrupted space to build the bridge. In addition, since the tunnel is sealed underwater, it remains protected from winter elements that can heavily impact traffic conditions. Despite the addition of a large-scale tunnel, the waters will remain free for large boats and ferries to pass overtop.
