Shenzhen's Transit System Uses Face Scans for Metro Payment

As technology continues to advance, the traditional payment systems of the past are all but disappearing, and one intriguing example of the advancement of this technology is Shenzhen's new facial recognition system that automatically charges patrons for their transit payment.

The new system scans an individual's face and automatically deducts the toll from the person's registered account. The software can even recognize if the person is over the age of 60, in which case their passage is free. This futuristic technology was designed by tech-giant Tencent and hopes to expand to be able to recognize other citizens who are eligible to receive free transit passage such as military veterans.

More cities are recognizing the benefits of using facial recognition software to increase efficiency in various sectors including airports and stores.
