Modernly Designed Courthouses

The Toronto Courthouse is Getting a Makeover Thanks to Renzo Piano

Italian architect Renzo Piano and his Building Workshop revealed the first Canadian project in the redesign of the Toronto Courthouse. This new space commissioned by Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of the Attorney General will provide a home for the numerous law courts spread across Toronto, in an attempt to create modern and efficient services for all residents of the city.

The new Toronto Courthouse will place an emphasis on the building's exterior space to create an active street presence. The entry will feature a 20-meter-tall glass atrium that will let in plenty of natural light and connect the internal space with the external world. The space will also house a public learning center meant to educate visitors on Indigenous history and issues related to the Ontario justice system.

While the building may seem incredibly open, it does offer quite a bit in the way of security, as multiple surveillance systems and scanners will be in place. Private corridors will provide access to courtrooms away from the public eye.
