During the Tokyo Hotaru festival in Japan, most people turned their eyes away from the starry night sky and instead focussed on a riverbed of luminous lights.
Panasonic decided to take part in the festival by releasing 100,000 light bulbs into the Sumida River that flows through the center of Tokyo. These Everled bulbs are solar-powered and they illuminated the river with a glowing blue. The Everled bulbs are meant to portray fireflies and also the act of paying homage with the Japanese tradition of floating candles.
The internal Evolta batteries soaked up enough sunlight the day before and turned the river into a floating blanket of bright blue lights. Towards the end of the festival, the floating bulbs were fished out with a net.
