'Paleko Arch Studija' and 'Plazma Architekturos Studija' recently collaborated on a series of timber-clad houses that are raised up above ammunition vaults. When building new homes, it is sometimes necessary to work around existing structures. These architects came up with a unique way to leave a historical structure intact.
The timber-clad houses are located in Lithuania's capital city of Vilnius. There are 18 homes in total and they occupy a large plot of land inside the Pavilniai Regional Park. The area features a number of 1920s ammunition stores that were originally built by the Polish army. In order to keep this historical feature intact, the architects decided to elevate each dwelling. As a result, the cozy timber homes sit on top of slender columns that leave the ammunition vaults visible. Despite the historical details, each home features a contemporary wood facade and a modern pitched roof.
