The Theme Pavilion is a Highlight at Qingdao Horticultural Expo

UNStudio has designed the 'Theme Pavilion,' a series of pavilions inspired by the form of a Chinese flower. The pavilions are the centerpiece for the Qingdao International Horticultural Exposition 2014, held at Baiguo Mountain Park.

The Theme Pavilion covers a sprawling 28,000 square meters, and is comprised of four buildings -- an exhibition hall, a performance space, media center and a conference suite. Individually, each building features a curved design, inspired by the surrounding mountains. Together, the buildings layout forms the petals of Qingdao's official flower, the Chinese Rose.

Studio principal Ben van Berkel, explains, "The forms of the pavilion buildings respond to the nearby mountains, with their carefully composed rooftops acting as plateaus, each addressing a different portion of the master plan by different inclination and terracing, and providing panoramic views which extend far into the surrounding landscape."
