Historically Inspired Garden Structures

The Memorial Pot Reminisces on Traditional Korean Food

Korean architecture and design firm Unsangdong Architects were recently enlisted by a Korean foods company called SAMPIO, to design an installation for the company’s garden; an interactive structure called the Memorial Pot. The structure is a stepped arrangement that mimics the topography of a hill. The installation is fitted around three chimneys taken from 60 years ago, from a soy sauce factory. The chimneys now function as planters for decorative purposes. Through the combination of the chimneys and the stepped iron structure, SAMPIO wishes to integrate the history of fermented foods and its current-day edible goods in the food industry.

The frames that wrap around the three brick cylinders and are meant to be a symbol that is reminiscent of the traditional Korean process of preparing fermented foods in pots.
