Tezuka Architects Create ‘Ring Around a Tree' Playhouse

Fuji Yochien is a private preschool in the suburbs of Tokyo, Japan that recently got a new play area for its students thanks to the Tezuka Architects, who also designed the school back in 2007. The group created ‘Ring Around a Tree,’ a structure that is built around one of the massive Keyaki trees that are found on campus.

Architect Peter Cook visited the school’s campus and was reminded of the song ‘Ring Around the Rosy’ when he decided to embark on building ‘Ring Around a Tree.’

Art Director Kashiwa Sato says, "[o]ne of the primary objectives is to nurture an abounding creativity." ‘Ring Around a Tree’ does just that. While still acting as the walls to classrooms, the structure by the Tezuka Architects is also a huge jungle gym and play area where the children are encouraged to create their own rules and games.
