Freestanding Tea Houses

Mimi Jung's Private Parlor Is a Space for Comfort and Contemplation

The traditional Japanese tea house is reinvented by Mimi Jung with more of an introspective angle. The designer has created a circular-planned space with its own floor and revolving walls, making it a private sanctuary, even in the middle of a room. It is intended to offer a safe and cozy place to meditate on your day, or relax and sip tea with family or a couple of close friends.

The walls of the Tea House are covered in a diaphanous material that screens the interior while remaining breezy and an acoustically open. The mind may be better practiced at tuning out ambient noise when you're inside the Tea House. The conflict between everyday life on the outside and more spiritual experiences on the inside is overcome in the act of pushing and pulling the doors aside, revealing a small, built-in table where you can place a candle and your herbal tea.
