These tattooed Disney princesses prove that the classic cartoon characters from the house of mouse are still ripe for re-invention.
Digital artist Joel Santana's ongoing project 'Inked Princess Series' imagines several iconic Disney princesses and makes them over as tattooed pin-up models. Each character has shed their antiquated and PG-rated image for a more sensual and independent look of a modern day women.
Although a clear departure from their overly-wholesome beginnings, each of these tattooed Disney pin-up illustrations feature subtle nods to each character's origins. For example, Belle from 'Beauty and the Beast' still retains her love for literature, while also receiving a tattoo of the rose that becomes the centerpiece of her story. Ariel from 'The Little Mermaid' can also be seen receiving a tattoo of a crab -- showing she hasn't forgotten about her friends from under the sea.
