Giant Swiss Planetariums

The Swiss Museum of Transport's Planetarium is Getting a Refurbishment

The refurbished planetarium at the Swiss Museum of Transport is one of the few in the world that is able to project moving pictures on the inside of its 18-meter high dome.

This innovation aims to extend the Swiss museum's reputation for fascinating young and old visitors alike since it opened in 1969.

Within the dome, which has a projection area of 508 square meters, visitors are treated to breathtaking sights of the sky and the solar system, and discover principles and discoveries from the world of astronomy. A maximum of 230 visitors can enjoy the projections at a time.

The technology was designed in part by Swiss company Auviso. Auviso used special P-5 wash lights to illuminate the planetarium. These lights are equipped with an optimized cooling system and a control mechanism that allows for flicker-free operation. This is hugely important so as to not interfere with the astronomical projections.
