Eco-Friendly Prayer Rugs

This Sustainable Prayer Mat Utilizes 50% Less Material

Designed by Saudi Arabian-based Shepard Design Studio, this sustainable prayer mat uses 50 percent less material when compared to its more traditional counterparts. To achieve this sustainable design, the prayer mat features an irregular form that is shaped specifically around the seven points of the body that connect with the mat while praying. Presented during Saudi Design Week, Shepard Design Studio wanted to take the opportunity to create a more eco-friendly alternative to an item used by Muslims five times a day.

The sustainable prayer mat is composed of three main sections. There are two distinct circles for the hands, one triangle for the forehead, and a base to sit or stand on. All these pieces are interconnected with thin strips of material that feature various embellishments of leaves and flowers.
