Convenience Store Drone Deliveries

This Supply Delivery Service Flew a Drone to Fukushima

Following the 2011 nuclear disaster in Fukushima, supply delivery drones are now being employed to bring food and convenience store products to customers nearby, aiding with the area's recovery effort. E-commerce company Rakuten collaborated with convenience store chain Lawson to launch a drone delivery service.

The first supply delivery just took place on October 31st and brought fried chicken and croquettes to an elderly customer in Miniamisoma, an area about 16 miles away from the nuclear reactor. The Japanese retailer plans on doing the program for a 6 month trial in the Fukushima area. If it's successful, the new free service will be more long-term for those who find it difficult to travel long distances to shop.
