Mind-Bending Interactive Paintings

These Superimposed Images Engage Senses in a Trippy Way

These superimposed images of women are unique drawings that engage viewers in a sensory experience unlike that of conventional art pieces. Upon first glance, the viewer is convinced that they must squint and refocus their eyes to see the subjects clearly. However, doing so will not unify the image. The portraits remain blurry, the classically beautiful women appearing to have multiple eyes, mouths and noses. However, Canadian artist Alex Garant wants the viewer to fight this physical response and create a unified image by controlling their perspective.

This mind-bending technique is achieved by hand-drawing the portrait a first time, then superimposing the image by drawing it again slightly above or below the first version. Wet paint is then applied to wet paint "alla prima" to the entirety of the piece, giving it a whimsical, trippy look. The superimposed images in the 'Queen of Double Eyes' series exemplify an interactive type of art that is growing in popularity.
