Offering an unusual way to explore the ocean floor is celebrated Japanese artist Isana Yamada that has recreated scenes of sunken ships depicted inside translucent miniature replicas of whales. The sculptures are mounted on pedestals allowing the viewer to feel as though the mammals of the sea are swimming around them.
Yamada's pieces are an interpretation of the Buddhist circle of existence and the scenes invoked in those stories. In total the piece contains six whales each showcasing a different scene that symbolically references a different aspect of the circle. The whales all contain different three dimensional underwater images showcasing scenes such as a sunken sail boat that alludes to humanity. The six whale sculptures are arranged in a circle as well for added effect.
