Illusory Toy Car Photography

Lost Highway by Stuart McGarey Shows Hot Wheels on Retro Roads

Photographer Stuart McGarey states that he loves toy cars, 70s car chase films and photography, and his illusory series Lost Highway combines the three in beautiful miniaturized fashion.

Each image features one or more Hot Wheels toy cars against a printed backdrop; McGarey achieves the retro feel and grungy noise through color treatment in Photoshop. The final product looks like a tilt-shift version of a vintage photo.

I'm particularly drawn to the images in Lost Highway that depict a Hot Wheels car driving down a beachside road. While Stuart McGarey didn't indicate where his background photos were captured, there are several stretches of the 101 and the Pacific Coast Highway here in Southern California that look just like the first and second photos in the gallery.
