Athletic social network 'Strava' is introducing a new Strava app called 'Beacon.' Its purpose is to enhance the safety of users when cycling or running. The feature is an option only available to those who are Strava Premium members using iOS or Androids.
The Beacon app gives athletes the ability to share their real-time location to specific contacts. Once the runner or cyclist begins their trip, they can select three safety contacts to receive a text sent from the app with a unique URL that will track where the athlete is. Additionally, contacts will also receive information about the user's mobile battery power, which makes sense because if an athlete disappears off of the URL map, it could be due to a dead cell phone.
Strava has recognized a need and concern of outdoor athletes and has found a profitable way to find a solution. The Beacon app may prove to be invaluable to cyclists and runners, especially women.
