Steampunk Nautilus is a speaker concept created by maker hide-key that repurposes a 500-million-year-old nautilus shell as the resonating body for audio output. The project uses a vibration exciter mounted within a custom silicone cartridge housed in the shell’s living chamber, transforming the shell itself into a diaphragm that vibrates to produce sound. The shell is repaired using removable metal and epoxy materials that follow steampunk-kintsugi principles, with all adhesives chosen for reversibility so the specimen can be returned to its original state. The design also includes a Bluetooth connection to source audio wirelessly.
The shell is mounted on a base of quince wood supported by brass pillars arranged in a circle, allowing the angle of the shell to be adjusted. Threaded brass rods and soft UV resin at contact points minimize mechanical noise while securing the shell.
