'The Space Cup' is a new development from researchers at Portland State University, who have successfully figured out a way that astronauts in space can drink coffee.
Rather than being required to eat or drink from a pouch, astronauts may now tip The Space Cup using the same natural motions that are used to direct liquid from a cup into the mouth. The design of the finished product was inspired by a prototype created by an astronaut aboard the International Space Station in 2008.
As well as solving a very specific problem related to drinking liquids in space, the research team believes that The Space Cup also has other implications for other parts of space travel. For instance, similar principles may be applied to improve refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
