Commemorative Vinyl Murals

Alex Fowkes Celebrates Sony Music's 125th Anniversary

In celebration of Sony Music’s 125th anniversary, the company commissioned designer Alex Fowkes to commemorate the label’s heritage with a timeline stretching 150 square meters of blank white walls. Using nothing but CNC cut vinyl in red and black, he covered the walls of Sony’s London offices with many of the iconic names and symbols that have dominated Sony’s reign.

Paying tribute to stars as recent as Britney Spears all the way back to artists signed under the label in 1887, the wall features almost 1000 names. From Michael Jackson to Jimi Hendrix to Aretha Franklin, the installation uses Sony’s 125th anniversary as an opportunity to underline its incredible contribution to popular culture and music history.

Designed digitally first, the art is then printed onto 54 two-meter columns and cut into vinyl sheets before being applied to the wall. After the adhesive sets, the clear plastic coating on the outside is stripped and red accents are applied. The final product has a historical, yet headline news feel.
