Perplexing Gender Equality Ads

This Australian Snickers Commercial Comments on Gender Bias

The latest Snickers commercial stars an assembly of Australian construction workers cat-calling women on the street. But instead of the usual sexist humdrum, the laborers shout empowering statements, such as "You want to hear a filthy word? Gender bias!" and "Have a productive day!"

The commercial claims to be investigating how construction workers act when they're "not themselves" (ie. when they're hungry, and could use a Snickers bar.) However, while the reverse-stereotype of the a-typical, blue-blooded construction worker is pretty funny, it's also a little bit of a head-scratcher.

If starving themselves makes men a little more conscious about gender politics (and a little less likely to behave like a chauvinistic pig,) then perhaps we should withhold the Snickers. At least, until we can all agree that street harassment is unacceptable.
